Two-factor authentication (2FA) relies on passwords as one of its factors, and passwords can be stolen or breached. Traditional MFA methods also usually depend on a one-time-password SMS code or push notification as a second factor, which can itself be phished or bypassed. Passwordless systems eliminate password management completely and use no shared credentials in the authentication process, so there is nothing to be breached or stolen.
